Mission

At Stable Road Foundation, our motto is “feel the impact.” That means we go beyond writing checks for noble causes— we believe in rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty, because that’s how we deliver real results for real people.

Our work is guided by two commitments: to provide children with everything they need to grow and thrive, and to protect the places where they live. We see these missions as intertwined, because healthy children come from healthy communities, and healthy communities come from healthy environments.

We have a special commitment to lifting up those in need—particularly children living with special needs and/or difficult circumstances. Our founder, Ed Freedman, is a proud father to two daughters of his own. He knows from personal experience how much work goes into raising a child, especially when they need extra support. His commitment to serving these kids and their families comes from a place of deep understanding and empathy.

Ed’s love of the natural world also helps guide the Foundation’s mission. An avid outdoorsman, he knows how fragile our ecosystems are, and how deeply local communities depend on clean air, water, and power. This is why the Foundation has taken on projects around the world, with the goal of showing that sustainable development and environmental conservation are two sides of the same coin.

While the Foundation is proud of our global projects, we also know that
the work begins at home. As a Hawaii-based organization, we recognize that we have a responsibility to our neighbors and local communities. The name “Stable Road” has a long and storied history on Maui—generations of residents have found inspiration and connection in this scenic locale, and today we seek to carry on this legacy through our work. We understand the responsibility that we hold as stewards of the land, and we’re always looking for ways to pay these blessings forward.

Who We Help

We seek out local activists and leaders to help guide our giving in way that meet the most pressing needs of Hawaii and the Hawaiian people, especially:

A good education for all children

Culturally competent care for elders

Affordable housing and medical care

Improved water infrastructure

Regenerative agriculture and environmental stewardship

Native Hawaiian cultural preservation

To this end, the Foundation is partnering with more than a dozen local Hawaiian organizations—such as Na Hale O Maui, which focuses on affordable housing, and Hālau of ‘Ōiwi Arts, which supports traditional arts and cultural programming. We’re proud to support these organizations with the Foundation’s resources and to learn from the deep wisdom they have to share. We believe that local communities know their own needs better than anyone, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to work with such knowledgeable and passionate partners.

“Feel the impact.”
