Ed Freedman and Stable Road Foundation Donate to Hawai’i Land Trust
Earlier this month, Stable Road Foundation announced our $5,000 donation to Hawai’i Land Trust (HILT), a local nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding the ecosystems and traditional conservation practices of Hawaii.
We’ve been longtime supporters of HILT’s work, which aligns perfectly with the Foundation’s mission to protect our natural environment for the next generation. And our donation this year couldn’t be going to a better cause.
HILT has been doing great work all around Hawaii ever since it was founded in 2011. They now protect nearly 22,000 acres of land, divided into seven community preserves. Each year these preserves attract over 26,000 visitors, who come to learn about the uniquely Hawaiian makeup of the ecosystems protected in each preserve.
Waihee Refuge is one of those preserves, and it’ll be the main recipient of the Foundation’s donation. This gorgeous area spans 277 acres of coastal dunes and wetlands, once home to two of the most prominent villages in Hawaii. It’s home to endangered Hawaiian birds like the ‘Alae ke‘oke‘o, and medicinal plants like the ‘Uhaloa.
Many of these treasures can be hard to spot without a little help, so the Refuge put up interpretive signage through the area. This helped many more visitors enjoy the full experience of Waihee, but the signs had become weathered and hard to read over the years.
Thanks to Stable Road Foundation, though, visitors to the Waihee Refuge can now easily learn about all the unique flora and fauna of the area—as well as the local history of the people who lived there.
For our team at the Foundation, working with Waihee Refuge was especially rewarding because of the deep respect we have for their work. They’re preserving the legacy that makes this land so special, and we’re proud to help them pass down centuries of wisdom to the next generation.
